Stoneridge Electronics’ change
to environmentally friendly lacquer
Stoneridge Electronics has for a long time been one of the leading subcontractors in the heavy vehicle industry. They manufacture meter displays for heavy trucks and buses for customers such as Mercedes, Volvo Trucks, Scania, etc. In the middle of the 1990s, new legislation was introduced in Sweden that regulated how much solvent a single company could use and release to the environment. Stoneridge Electronics in Örebro had for several years used in its production a solvent-based circuit board lacquer with good performance. Since production volumes were large, it also required a lot of lacquer and so the emissions of solvent were high. In fact, too high in the opinion of the Environment & Public Health Department in Örebro which exerted great pressure on Stoneridge to change to a more environmentally sound circuit board lacquer.
Several lacquers were tested
A long and large-scale project was initiated to find alternative circuit board lacquers. It was quite difficult, because the
Tribotec’s winning solution
also proved to save time
After three years of careful investigation, the TSE 3991 CU was selected as the best alternative, among other reasons because of its superior protection against condensation. This was very important, since a lorry can be left standing for long periods in high atmospheric humidity. At the same time, it was observed that, with the new lacquer, a slow and costly washing process for the circuit boards could be removed completely from the production line. Unlike the previous lacquer, the TSE 3991 CU showed perfect adhesion even without washing.
